Chris Evans is an American actor and filmmaker. He is best known for portraying superhero roles, such as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four film franchise. Although he has also tried his hands at playing dramatic and romantic roles, it is his superhero roles which earned him the most acclaim. After several years of a successful acting career, Evans has also ventured into direction.
Background
Ethnicity:
Chris Evans’s paternal grandfather was of Welsh, English, and Scottish descent, while Chris’s paternal grandmother was of German ancestry. Chris’s mother is of half Italian and half Irish descent.
Chris Evans was born on June 13, 1981, in Boston, Massachusetts, the United States, and raised in the nearby town of Sudbury. While his dad, Robert, provided financial stability as a dentist, Evans and his three siblings were drawn to the performing arts world of their mother, Lisa, a dancer turned youth theater director. As Evans recalled, "We were like the von Trapps [from The Sound of Music], all singing and dancing."
Education
Bitten by the acting bug in the first grade because his older sister, Carly, started performing, Evans followed suit and began appearing in school plays. While at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, his drama teacher cited his performance as Leontes in The Winter's Tale as exemplary of his skill.
A natural athlete, Evans wrestled and played lacrosse at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, when not invested in his school or community theater. He spent the summer before his senior year of high school interning for a casting company in New York City, making valuable contacts and honing his skills at the Lee Strasberg Institute. Eager to return, the aspiring actor sped through his senior year to graduate a half-semester ahead of his classmates. After more plays and regional theatre, he moved to New York and attended the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute.
After doing an educational video called Biodiversity: Wild About Life! and appeared as a model named Tyler for the Hasbro board game Mystery Date, Chris began focusing on projects on screen instead of the stage.
Sent to Los Angeles by his agent in the late 1990s to audition for a show called Get Real (where he met Anne Hathaway), Evans instead wound up with a supporting role on Opposite Sex, alongside Milo Ventimiglia, as one of the few boys to attend a former all-girls academy. The teen comedy-drama lasted for only eight episodes in the summer of 2000, but still provided vital exposure for its young stars. He landed one of the lead roles in Not Another Teen Movie (2001), the beginning of a series of spoof movies based on popular movies that have been released beforehand. He continued to make appearances on television shows as he was gaining his momentum in the film industry.
In 2004, he starred alongside his now longtime friend and co-star, Scarlett Johansson, in the movie The Perfect Score, also starring Erika Christensen and Bryan Greenberg. Though the movie wasn’t very successful, Chris continued on to star in Cellular later that year with Kim Basinger, Jason Statham, and Jessica Biel. He also filmed two independent films, Fierce People and London. In 2005, Chris got his first taste of the Marvel Universe, playing Johnny Storm (Human Torch) in Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. He admitted that he was uneasy about the movies because they weren’t as he envisioned them, though he was excited.
Returning to comic-sourced material, Evans provided voice work for the animated TMNT (2007), as the boyfriend of the Ninja Turtles' colleague, April O'Neil. He later co-starred in the action-comedy The Losers (2010), which drew mixed reviews despite a strong cast, and landed a supporting role in the entertaining Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), as an over-the-top version of the Hollywood action hero he had become.
Meanwhile, the actor took advantage of the all-American good looks and charm that made him a natural for romantic comedies. He played the "Harvard Hottie" of past and future co-star Scarlett Johannson in The Nanny Diaries (2007), before becoming the ideal match for Anna Faris in What's Your Number? (2011).
Coming off his early teen films, Evans showed he could handle weightier fare with London (2005), as a junkie struggling to get over his ex-girlfriend. He later took on Tennessee Williams in The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond (2008), with Bryce Dallas Howard, and portrayed a real-life lawyer and drug addict who goes after the pharmaceutical industry in Puncture (2010).
On the sci-fi front, Evans co-starred in Danny Boyle's little-seen but critically acclaimed Sunshine (2007), as an engineer on a space mission to jumpstart the dying sun. His effort was praised by its director, who called Evans "a bit of a Mary Poppins - he can pull anything out of the bag." He then played a telekinetic in Push (2009), though his performance was drowned out by a confusing plot.
Despite his Marvel commitments requiring much of his energy, Evans found the time for other screen projects to his liking. Iceman (2012) gave him the chance to overturn his squeaky-clean superhero image as a contract killer who assists Michael Shannon's sadistic hitman. Snowpiercer (2013) placed him back in leading man territory, albeit as an antihero in a dystopian future.
The actor made his directing debut with Before We Go, a tepidly received romantic comedy that premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. Another rom-com, Playing It Cool (2015) also failed to make much of a mark, but The Gifted (2017) fared far better, with Evans playing the guardian of a mathematics prodigy.
In March 2018, while awaiting the release of Infinity War, Evans made his Broadway debut in a revival of Kenneth Lonergan’s Lobby Hero. As part of a small cast, which included his former Scott Pilgrim co-star Michael Cera, Evans showcased his easy charm while hinting at the turmoil beneath the confident exterior of his veteran cop, Bill. Although Lobby Hero was scheduled for a limited run, Evans's well-reviewed performance suggested he would soon make his way back to the stage.
He has a number of upcoming projects. He will star as an Israeli Mossad agent in the thriller film The Red Sea Diving Resort and appear in murder mystery film Knives Out, which is scheduled for release in November 2019. In addition, he is attached to sci-fi film Infinite and will produce and star in the Defending Jacob series.

Religion
Evans grew up in a Catholic household. He stated that his parents were never devout practisers, however: “It wasn’t forced upon me and we didn’t go to church every week.”
Nowadays, Evans subscribes to a different kind of belief system, telling Hindustan Times in 2012 that he started taking an interest in Eastern philosophy as a teenager. “There was a whole religion that felt the way I was feeling. That’s when I thought, ‘Wow, I think I’m a Buddhist'”.
Evans went on to explain that he “spent three weeks in Rishikesh in 2005 or 2006 at a Buddhist retreat” and that he attends a Buddhism class in Los Angeles.
Politics
Evans is outspoken about his political views. Evans isn’t making a run for political office - yet - but he has recently co-founded a political website, A Starting Point, with the aim of bringing different sides of the debate together. Evans has interviews in the can for A Starting Point, having conducted conversations with both Democratic and Republican senators and representatives.
With the website’s aim “to create informed, responsible and empathetic citizens”, Evans says: “I’d be disappointed in myself if I didn’t speak up. Especially for fear of some monetary repercussion or career damage - that just feels really gross to me.”
He is an outspoken opponent of Donald Trump - he recently referred to the current POTUS as “an absolute dumb shit”. Evans endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.
Views
Evans has always been highly supportive of the LGBT community. In 2012 he said, "Are you kidding me? It's insane that civil rights are being denied people in this day and age. It's embarrassing, and it's heartbreaking. It goes without saying that I'm completely in support of gay marriage. In ten years we'll be ashamed that this was an issue."
Evans is not only a regular visitor to Boston Children’s Hospital, he has also supported Breast Cancer Care and partaken in Super Bowl bets to raise money for charity.
After Alabama passed the Human Life Protection Act, which imposes a near-total ban on abortions in the state, Evans wrote on Twitter that the bill was "absolutely unbelievable" and continued by saying, "If you're not worried about Roe v. Wade, you're not paying attention."
Quotations:
"For the youth, the indignation of most things will just surge as each birthday passes."
"I want to get married, though I want children - to me that's the ultimate thing. When you're old and on your death bed, looking back at your life it's not going to be the films you've made or what you've accomplished, it's the relationships you have. You're survived by things that matter - the people you love and those who love you back."
"Anyone who's had a tattoo knows once you get your first one, as you're walking out the door, you're planning the next."
Personality
Before he took on Captain America, however, Evans found himself in a very dark place emotionally, something which the actor has been vocal about. Evans recently told Rolling Stone that the press tours for his films around the time of Captain America: The First Avenger had begun to make him nervous, describing the red carpet experience as akin to “walking on hot coals”. As soon as Evans accepted the role of Steve Rogers, he booked himself into therapy for the first time. He now goes as often as he can, something which Robert Downey Jr says has changed Evans’ life.
Mental health is an important subject to him, and one of his hobbies is to read self-help books as well as books that focus on mindfulness. He wants to provide himself with a peaceful and content state of mind.
“Nobody laughs more than him”, said Downey. “I’ve also seen him, over the last 10 years, go from being someone who had laughably real social anxiety to someone who has grown more and more comfortable in their own skin.”
Chris Evans has always been devoted to animal rights. For his recent film Gifted, there is a scene featuring an animal shelter. In between filming, Evans found and adopted a dog named Dodger from the same location.
Evans, who splits his time between Los Angeles and Boston, is a serious sports fan who retains loyalty to hometown teams. In 2014, he narrated the NFL Network's America's Game, which recounted the New England Patriots' run to a thrilling Super Bowl championship earlier that year.
Physical Characteristics:
At 6 feet tall but naturally slim, Evans has displayed the results of long hours in the gym while progressing from the rangy jock of Not Another Teen Movie to the beefier Human Torch of Fantastic Four, to the cartoonishly muscular Captain America. Packing on the pounds was vital to the appearance of his laboratory-enhanced superhero, prompting a training regimen that included high-weight reps of squats, deadlifts and incline bench presses, as well as body weight exercises like dips and pull-ups. By the time of The Winter Soldier, he had incorporated gymnastics and plyometrics to his routine for more speed and agility, aiding his efforts in such scenes as when he beats up a group of men in a crowded elevator.
