Ino Tadataka was adopted by the Ino family. Rendered meritorious services during the famine which broke out in the Temmei Era (1783). At the age of 50, handing over his family affairs to his son he began the study of the calendar under Yoshitoki Takahashi in Edo and soon became a brilliant scholar. Was commissioned by the Government to survey Hokurikudo and the east coast of Hokkaido and other parts of Japan (1800). The re-sult of his surveys, which lasted 18 years, were embodied in his work titled Udai Yo-chi Zenzu (atlas), which he presented to the Shogunate. All his surveys were done through instruments he made himself and many of his findings were as accurate as those made by modern instruments of today.
