(Joe Biden has both witnessed and participated in a moment...)
Joe Biden has both witnessed and participated in a momentous epoch of American history. In Promises to Keep, Joe Biden reveals what these experiences taught him about himself, his colleagues, and the institutions of government. With his customary candor and wit, Biden movingly recounts growing up in a staunchly Catholic multigenerational household in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Wilmington, Delaware; overcoming personal tragedy, life-threatening illness, and career setbacks; his relationships with presidents, with world leaders, and with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle; and his leadership of powerful Senate committees.
Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose
(In November 2014, thirteen members of the Biden family ga...)
In November 2014, thirteen members of the Biden family gathered on Nantucket for Thanksgiving, a tradition they had been celebrating for the past forty years; it was the one constant in what had become a hectic, scrutinized, and overscheduled life. The Thanksgiving holiday was a much-needed respite, a time to connect, a time to reflect on what the year had brought, and what the future might hold.
Joe Biden is an American politician. Biden is the president-elect of the United States and will become the 46th president when he will assume the charge on 20 January 2021. Biden is the oldest person ever elected to the White House. He also served as the 47th vice president of the United States from 2009 to 2017.
Background
Ethnicity:
Joe Biden has Irish (62.5%), as well as English, German, and remote French, Scottish, and Welsh ancestry.
Joe Biden was born on November 20, 1942, at St. Mary's Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the United States, to Catherine Eugenia "Jean" and Joseph Robinette "Joe" Biden, Sr. as the eldest of their four children. His father was a used car salesman who also cleaned furnaces for extra income. Biden has a sister, Valerie, and two brothers, Francis and James.
Biden credits his parents with instilling in him toughness, hard work, and perseverance. He has recalled his father frequently saying, "Champ, the measure of a man is not how often he is knocked down, but how quickly he gets up." He's also said that when he would come home sullen because he had been bullied by one of the bigger kids in the neighborhood, his mother would tell him, "Bloody their nose so you can walk down the street the next day!'"
Education
Biden attended St. Paul's Elementary School in Scranton. In 1955, when he was 13 years old, the family moved to Mayfield, Delaware - a rapidly growing middle-class community sustained primarily by the nearby DuPont chemical company. As a child, Biden struggled with a stutter, and kids called him "Dash" and "Joe Impedimenta" to mock him. He eventually overcame his speech impediment by memorizing long passages of poetry and reciting them out loud in front of the mirror.
Biden attended the St. Helena School until he gained acceptance into the prestigious Archmere Academy. Although he had to work by washing the school windows and weeding the gardens to help his family afford tuition, Biden had long dreamed of attending the school, which he called "the object of my deepest desire, my Oz."
He was a mediocre student, but displayed exceptional leadership qualities from a young age and was elected the class president during his junior and senior years. He was also a talented football player, despite his small size, he was a standout receiver on the football team. "He was a skinny kid," his coach remembered, "but he was one of the best pass receivers I had in 16 years as a coach." Biden graduated from Archmere in 1961.
He then went to the University of Delaware, where he studied history and political science and continued playing football. During his initial years in college, he was more interested in socializing and having fun than he was in academics. But he also developed a sharp interest in politics during these years, spurred in part by the inspiring inauguration of John F. Kennedy in 1961.
He started working hard and was accepted into the Syracuse University Law School upon his graduation from the University of Delaware in 1965. Biden was at best a mediocre law student. During his first year at Syracuse, he flunked a class for failing to properly cite a reference to a law review article. Although he claimed it was an accidental oversight, the incident would haunt him later in his career.
After graduation, Biden moved to Delaware to embark on a legal career and began practicing at a law firm. During this time he also became active on the political scene as a member of the Democratic Party and in 1970 he was elected to the New Castle County Council. While serving as councilman, in 1971, Biden started his own law firm.
In 1972, the Delaware Democratic Party encouraged a 29-year-old Biden to run against the popular Republican incumbent J. Caleb Boggs for the United States Senate. Although few thought he stood any chance, Biden ran a tireless campaign organized mostly by family members.
His sister, Valerie Biden Owens, served as his campaign manager, and both of his parents campaigned daily. That November, in a tight race with a large turnout, Biden won an upset victory to become the fifth-youngest United States senator elected in the nation's history.
A devastating tragedy struck the young man when his wife and children became the victims of a terrible automobile accident. His wife and daughter died while his two sons were badly injured. Biden was grief-stricken, yet he took the oath of office on January 5, 1973.
The next few years were very difficult for him as he had to manage his political career along with his responsibilities as a single parent to his boys. In spite of his personal tragedies, he fulfilled his political duties diligently and gained the respect of his colleagues.
Although he contemplated suspending his political career, Biden was persuaded to join the Senate in 1973, and he went on to win reelection six times, becoming Delaware’s longest-serving senator. During his time in the Senate, Biden won respect as one of the body's leading foreign policy experts, serving as chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations for several years.
In addition to foreign policy, Biden played a pivotal role in issues regarding criminal justice and drug policy. He served on the Committee on the Judiciary and chaired the committee from 1987 to 1995. He was also was a member of the International Narcotics Control Caucus.
In 1987, having established himself as one of Washington's most prominent Democratic lawmakers, Biden decided to run for the United States presidency. He dropped out of the Democratic primary, however, after reports surfaced that he had plagiarized part of a speech.
Biden had been suffering severe headaches during the campaign, and shortly after he dropped out in 1988, doctors discovered that he had two life-threatening brain aneurysms. Complications from the ensuing brain surgery led to blood clots in his lungs, which, in turn, caused him to undergo another surgery. Always resilient, Biden returned to the Senate after surviving a seven-month recovery period.
In 2007, 20 years after his first unsuccessful presidential bid, Biden once again decided to run for the United States presidency. His 2008 presidential campaign never gained momentum, and he withdrew from the race after placing fifth in the Iowa Democratic caucus in January of that year.
After Barack Obama amassed enough delegates to secure the Democratic presidential nomination, Biden emerged as a front-runner to be Obama’s vice presidential running mate. On August 23 Obama officially announced his selection of Biden as the Democratic Party’s vice presidential nominee, and on August 27 Obama and Biden secured the Democratic Party’s nomination.
On November 2, 2008, Barack Obama and Joe Biden convincingly defeated the Republican ticket of Arizona Senator John McCain and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. On January 20, 2009, Obama was sworn in as the 44th United States president and Biden became the 47th vice president.
The Democrats Obama and Biden proved to be very popular among the citizens in their respective positions as the President and Vice President and were easily re-elected to a second term in 2012. In his second term, Biden was chosen by Obama to head the Gun Violence Task Force, and he drafted certain actions that the President could take for reducing gun violence.
In addition, he was tasked with notable assignments. He helped avert several budget crises and played a key role in shaping the United States policy in Iraq. In 2015 his eldest son, Beau died from brain cancer; Biden recounted the experience in Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose (2017).
Several months later, Biden - who enjoyed high favourability ratings, partly due to candor and affable manner that resonated with the public - announced that he would not enter the 2016 presidential election, noting that the family was still grieving. Instead, he campaigned for Hillary Clinton, who ultimately lost the election to Donald Trump.
In April 2019, Joe Biden announced his bid for the candidacy of the Democratic presidential nominee for the 2020 election. He beat rivals Kamala Harris and Bernie Sanders to win the Democratic Party’s ticket for the 2020 presidential election. On August 11, 2020, Joe Biden picked Kamala Harris as his running mate for the 2020 election.
The much-anticipated first presidential debate between Biden and Trump on September 29, 2020, was a messy affair marked by frequent interruptions and heated discussions that quickly spiraled off-topic. A flustered Biden called his opponent a "clown," but he also managed to get in several shots at the president's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, and emphatically presented his views on law enforcement and climate change.
A second debate was scheduled for October 15, but after Trump declined to do a virtual debate, town halls for both candidates were scheduled instead. With microphones often muted during the third debate on October 22, Biden faced fewer interruptions as he articulated his positions on health care, immigration overhaul, and green jobs. He also again unloaded on the president for his coronavirus management and policy of separating migrant children from their parents at the border, drawing a clear distinction between their styles with the declaration that "America's character is on the ballot."
With several states counting mail-in ballots well past the close of polling places on November 3, 2020, the race remained too tight to call into the next day. However, the tide began shifting in Biden's favor with the announcements of his victories in Wisconsin and Michigan, along with reports of his leads in Arizona, Nevada, and Georgia. Meanwhile, President Trump launched a series of lawsuits that alleged voter fraud and sought to halt the counting in battleground states.
On November 7, 2020, four days after election day, Biden was declared as the 46th president-elect after winning Pennsylvania. Along with earning a record 74 million-plus votes, the soon-to-be 78-year-old was set to become the oldest president in the nation's history. Biden will be inaugurated as the 46th president of the United States on January 20, 2021.
Biden is the second Catholic to be elected president, after John F. Kennedy. When Joe Biden seeks to inspire or comfort, he turns to his faith. Biden is known as a deeply devout person of faith. His speeches are woven with references to God, biblical language, or the pope.
Politics
Joe Biden is a Democrat. As a senator, Biden focused on foreign relations, criminal justice, and drug policy. Biden was tasked with implementing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, helping to rebuild our economy and lay the foundation for a sustainable economic future. As part of his continued efforts to raise the living standards of middle-class Americans across the country, Biden has also focused on the issues of college affordability and American manufacturing growth, key priorities of the Administration.
He was particularly outspoken on issues related to the Kosovo conflict of the late ’90s, urging the United States action against Serbian forces to protect Kosovars against an offensive by Serbian Pres. Slobodan Milošević. On the Iraq War (2003-2011), Biden proposed a partition plan as a way to maintain a united, peaceful Iraq. Biden also was a member of the International Narcotics Control Caucus and was the lead senator in writing the law that established the office of "drug czar," a position that oversees the national drug-control policy.
He helped secure the Senate’s approval of the New START nuclear arms reduction treaty with Russia, together with significant new funding to maintain our nuclear laboratories. Biden has supported the Administration’s effort to re-establish leadership in the Asia Pacific, traveling to China, Japan, and Mongolia in August 2011 and completing an exchange of visits with China’s then-Vice President in February 2012, that country’s current leader.
Biden supports a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. He has pledged to protect Dreamers, or people brought to the United States illegally as children. In contrast to some other Democratic candidates, Biden expressed opposition to decriminalizing illegal border crossings. Biden voted for the Secure Fence Act of 2006, which built additional walls and barriers along the United States-Mexico border.
Biden supported the Paris climate accords, which the Trump administration abandoned in 2017. Biden has called the Paris accords "the best way to protect our children & global leadership." Unlike many of the far-left Democratic candidates, Biden has not endorsed the Green New Deal, which would usher in radical transformations of the United States economy to reduce human impact on global climate change. In June 2019, Biden released a proposal to spend $1.7 trillion on green energy technologies over the next 10 years, with the ultimate goal of putting the United States on track to eliminate net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Biden opposes legalizing marijuana because he said it might be a "gateway drug." Biden's campaign has said that as president he would "decriminalize marijuana use, automatically expunge prior possession convictions, support legalization of medical marijuana, and allow states to set their own rules about recreational use." He does not support defunding police departments and ants to end the death penalty. He supports ending the federal use of private prisons. Biden voted for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which Trump has repeatedly excoriated and threatened to unilaterally withdraw from. He supported the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and urged lawmakers to pass it during Obama's final months in office. Biden is typically a supporter of free trade, bucking calls for protectionist policies like heavy tariffs on various industries.
Biden wants higher taxes on wealthy Americans' in key areas like passive income. Biden has said he won't increase taxes for anyone who earns less than $400,000 per year. He also wants to increase the corporate tax rate to 28%. He has also argued for boosting tax relief for middle-class families, including expansions of the Child Tax Credit.
Views
In 2017, Joe Biden and his wife handed more than $1 million, or about 9% of their income, to 26 charities - including their family’s Beau Biden Foundation for the Protection of Children ($150,000) and the Joseph Biden Foundation ($100,000).
Quotations:
"I pledge to be a President who seeks not to divide, but to unify."
"I am proud to be a politician. There is no other walk of life which can do more for mankind than politics. It influences everything that happens to the American people."
"The country is crying out for leadership. Leadership that can unite us. Leadership that can bring us together. Leadership that can recognize the pain and deep grief of communities that have had a knee on their neck for too long."
"Rioting is not protesting. Looting is not protesting. Setting fires is not protesting. None of this is protesting. It's lawlessness, pure, and simple. And those who do it should be prosecuted."
"I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women, and heterosexual men and women marrying one another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties."

Joe Biden never drinks alcohol, citing a history of alcoholism in his family, he claims to be dry his entire life. Biden is a huge car enthusiast and he still owns the '67 Corvette Stingray he got from his father.
