Schifferes attended Yale University. He received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota and a Doctor of Philosophy in health education from Columbia University.
A founder and managing editor of Modern Medicine magazine for about 10 years, Schifferes was also founder and director of the Health Education Council, beginning in 1945. Schifferes also taught health and hygiene at Columbia University and was medical editor of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. He was also heard on the radio program “Psychologically Speaking.”
Justus Schifferes was best known as an editor and writer on health and science. During his long career, he wrote and edited numerous books. Among them were The Autobiography of Science (with F. R. Moulton), Science through the Ages, Healthier Living, Essentials of Healthier Living, Woman’s Personal Medical Guide, and How to Understand, Help, Enjoy and Get Along Better with the Older People in Your Life.
