2004
Nicholas Berkeley "Nick" Mason was born on January 27, 1944, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, England. He was the son of the documentary filmmaker Bill Mason.
Nick Mason attended the Hall School, Hampstead, and afterwards studied at Frensham Heights School, near Farnham, Surrey. He later attended the Regent Street Polytechnic (now the University of Westminster).
On 26 November 2012, Mason received the Honorary title of Doctor of Letters from the University of Westminster.
Nick Mason met future bandmates Roger Waters and Rick Wright while studying architecture at Regent Street Polytechnic. He began playing with them in Sigma 6 in 1963, and in the Screaming Abdabs the following year, and in 1965 the Syd Barrett-led blues/R&B outfit that soon became Pink Floyd. Although drumming for Floyd was far and away Mason's primary concern over the next few decades, he did occasionally delve into extracurricular projects.
He moonlighted as a producer during the '70s (particularly during the latter half of the decade), working not just with fellow proggers like Robert Wyatt, Gong, and Steve Hillage, but also post-bop jazz eccentric Michael Mantler and punk group the Damned. In 1981, Mason released his first album under his own name, Fictitious Sports. The music was a quirky blend of jazz and rock composed by Carla Bley, who also played keyboards; other supporting musicians included vocalist Wyatt, trumpeter Mantler, and guitarist Chris Spedding. In turn, Mason played drums with Mantler off and on throughout the '80s, including on the albums Something Else (1982) and Live (1987).
Mason also formed a production company with former 10cc guitarist Rick Fenn, which produced music for films (including White of the Eye), television, and advertisements. As Mason + Fenn, the two also recorded a pop album in 1985 called Profiles, which produced the David Gilmour-sung single "Lie for a Lie." As Floyd's recording and touring schedule grew more sporadic, Mason was left with more time to pursue his favorite hobby, auto racing.
Mason returned to the stage in 2002, joining Waters on the final two nights of his world tour; he would go on to appear on subsequent Waters' tours, albeit sporadically. He reunited with the full classic Pink Floyd Lineup in 2005, where they performed a short set at Live 8's London show. Mason continued to crop up over the years, including a performance at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games. His first new band in over two decades emerged in 2018, calling themselves Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets they were something of a supergroup, featuring bassist Guy Pratt (Pink Floyd, David Gilmour), guitarist Lee Harris (Blockheads), vocalist Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet), and producer Dom Beken on keys; the band focus on playing Pink Floyd's early material.

2004Nick Mason is an atheist.
Nick Mason has joined Roger Waters in expressing support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign against Israel over the Israeli–Palestinian conflict and urged the Rolling Stones not to play in Israel in 2014.
During a Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets concert in Luxembourg on 9 September 2018, Mason stated that he had voted Remain in the European Union membership referendum.
Mason’s drumming style is heavily influenced by big band music and jazz and was therefore drawn to acoustic drums. The sound from his play was devoid of the harsh demarcation of beats 2 and 4 to the fatter and gentler tone.
Nick Mason also adopted a laid back and gentler approach of drumming contrary to that of other progressive rock drummers of the time. Mason was the sole composer of the band’s songs like “The Grand Vizier’s Garden Party 1-3 and “Speak to Me.” He is the namesake of the band’s one-off song “Nick’s Boogie.” As the drummer of Pink Floyd, Mason hardly played any vocal part except for few spoken lines in songs like.
One of These Days (Corporal Clegg album), Signs of Life, and Learning to Fly. Water left the band in 1985, and for about seven years, there were litigations over the ownership of the name “Pink Floyd.” Water wanted to dissolve the band or prevent the name from being used by the other members. Mason and Waters later patched their differences.
In common with Roger Waters, Mason has played concerts to raise funds for the Countryside Alliance, a group that campaigned against the ban on fox hunting with the Hunting Act 2004. In 2007 they both performed at Highclere Castle in Hampshire in support of the group.
Quotations:
"The reality is, like any band, you can never quite quantify who does what."
"There are so many ingredients that are contained in 'The Wall' that were not necessarily contained in other Pink Floyd records, particularly following on from 'Animals,' which was very spare and sparse. Production on it was much more massive, the complexity of the recording was much more intense."
"I was brought up in a car family, my dad loved cars and I was taught the art of making an Austin 7 operate."
"The last thing we would want is for our fans to feel that we're trying to find the 17th opportunity to sell them the same song."
"There were a lot of gifted amateurs in my day. Most of the kids now play fantastically well. I think there are so many bands around now who might get there, but it's a tougher journey."
Nick Mason is a board member and co-chairman of the Featured Artists' Coalition, the UK-based nonprofit organization for featured musical artists.
Mason is a qualified pilot and flies an Aerospatiale AS 350 Squirrel helicopter in specially painted colors.
