The fact that the overgrown, sadly neglected house is rumored to be haunted doesn’t deter Amabel. Until strange things start happening... Governess-turned-sleuth Miss Silver must follow a trail of poison-pen letters to save an heiress from murder. Rachel Treherne has always had a steady head on her shoulders; it’s why her late father named her the sole trustee of his considerable fortune. But the decision galled a number of Rachel’s relatives, including her married older sister, her socialist nephew, and her father’s ambitious young cousin. Rachel fears she may be overreacting to the anonymous letters she’s received threatening her life, but then someone tampers with the chocolates she bought herself. If her cousin hadn’t partaken first and noticed an unwholesome taste, who knows what may have happened? Miss Silver suspects someone in Rachel’s inner circle has grown tired of being a poor relation, and she travels incognito to the Treherne country home to unmask the culprit - before it’s too late - in this intriguing entry in the beloved series featuring a contemporary of Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple. Lonesome Road is the 3rd book in the Miss Silver Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

1947
Patricia Wentworth was born on November 10, 1878, in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, India. She was the daughter of Lieutenant-General Sir Edmond Roche Elles.
Patricia Wentworth was educated privately, and then at Blackheath High School.
Patricia Wentworth's first novel, a historical romance, was published in the main journal for the British Raj in Punjab, the Civil and Military Gazette. A Marriage under the Terror was a tale of the French Revolution. British readers were familiar with this history from reading other fictional accounts such as Baroness Orczy’s The Scarlet Pimpernel (1905) and Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities (1859).
A Marriage under the Terror tells of a savage follower of Mara who pursues an innocent convent-raised aristocrat who narrowly escapes the guillotine. Critics found the novel exciting and well-plotted, but faulted the immature style. Elies published five more historical romances, under titles such as The Devil's Wind and The Fire Within, and a book of verse titled A Child's Rhyme Book. Following her second marriage, she began writing thrillers such as The Astonishing Adventure of Jane Smith. But it is for her "Miss Silver Mysteries," written under the pseudonym "Patricia Wentworth" that she is best known.
Elies created the character of Miss Maude Silver not long after the marriage. A dowdy, retired governess in dull, old- fashioned dresses and with pince-nez and knitting needles, this creation of Wentworth’s defies the expectations of her appearance. No dithering old biddy, Miss Silver has a mind like a steel trap but uses her appearance to disarm her adversaries. She receives her clients in the parlor room of her modest but comfortable apartment. The Victorian furniture is threadbare, and the prints on the wall reveal an utter lack of artistic sophistication, but the framed photographs that cover the mantle, bookcase, and elsewhere depict Miss Silver’s exciting life as a private investigator.
