    Career

    • Musical director of the Mariinskii Ballet in 1910. Active as a music critic. Professor of Leningrad Conservatory in 1925.

      Moved to Moscow in 1943. Professor of Moscow Conservatory. Consultant at the Bolshoi Theatre.

      Elected Chairman of the Union of Composers in 1948. Composed music for the ballets Flame of Paris, Fountain of Bakhchisarai, The Captive of the Caucasus. Gained the reputation of a musical scholar with very wide interests.
