    • Professor of mechanics. Early involvement in revolutionary activity. At first a Menshevik, later a Cadet.

      Appointed head of the Russian commission sent to the USA for the purchase of military technology, 1916. Appointed Russian ambassador to the USA by the Provisional Government. Was against both Whites and Reds during the Civil War, promoted the idea of a revolutionary, democratic Russia.

      Refused to recognize the Soviet government. Retainedthe status of ambassador to the USA until 1922. From former Embassy funds created the Bakhmetev Foundation, which played a large part in preserving Russian cultural and historical heritage in the USA, mainly in the large university libraries and archives.
