Involved in revolutionary activity with the populists. In exile near Kolyma, 1890-1898. Became interested in the life of the local population, and after taking part in several expeditions in order to study the people of north eastern Russia (1894-1896, 1900-1901), became the foremost authority on their history, folklore, culture and languages.
Organized the Northern Committee of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the Institute of the People of the North. Professor at Leningrad University, 1921. One of the creators of alphabets for local Siberian languages.
