Deputy Secretary, later Secretary, of the Party Committee of the Mining Institute, 1961-1965. Senior party posts in Moscow, 1961-1968, including the post of 1st Secretary of the Cheremushki Raikom, Moscow. In 1974 responsible for the so-called Bulldozers Art Exhibition, when the police and Committee for State Security smashed artists’ works using bulldozers.
The case attracted bad international publicity. Fired from his post. USSR Ambassador to Vietnam, 1974-1986. Deputy Foreign Minister from May 1986.
Candidate member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
