Menshevik leader. Member of the 4th Duma and, along with Kerenskii, one of the main orators of the left. Member of the Workers’ Group of the Military-Industrial Committee After the February revolution 1917, first chairman of the Petrograd Soviet. Cautiously greeted Lenin on his arrival from Switzerland in April 1917 (Lenin is said to have disregarded him completely).
After the Bolshevik take-over, moved to Georgia. When Georgia was incorporated into USSR, emigrated to Western Europe. Settled in Paris where he died (suicide suspected, though not proved).
