Graduated from the Moscow Oblast’ Teachers’ Institute.
Took part in World War II. School teacher and translator of poetry. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, his short satirical stories appeared in the West under the pseudonym Nikolai Arzhak. Arrested in 1965 and put on trial with A. Siniavskii.
Accused of anti-Soviet propaganda and slander on Soviet life. Sentenced to 5 years in prison camps. The trial became an international literary scandal and focus of protests, and was well documented as the first show trial of writers in post-Stalin USSR. After serving his term, he was not allowed to live in Moscow.
Settled in Kaluga. Lives now in Moscow.
