Background

  • Dzhambul, Dzhabaev was born in 1846 in the village of Semirech’e.

  • Education

    • Pupil of the akyn, Saiumbai.

    Career

    • Expert on Kazakh music. Remembered a great number of tunes. Sang accompanied by the dombra at aitysy (Kazakh story-telling competitions) in the tolgau style (a recitative traditional with the akyn.).

      Stalin Prize, 1941. Received enormous publicity in the 1930s for his primitive hymns on Stalin.
