  • Gadzhibekov, Sultan Ismail ogly was born on May 8, 1919 in Shusha (now Nagorno Karabakhskaia Oblast’).

  • Education

    • Graduated from the Baku Music School, 1939. Pupil of A. Kolpinskii. Graduated from the Conservatory in 1946.

      Pupil of B. Zeidman (composition) and N. Chumakov (musical theory).

    Career

    • Influenced by his uncle, the Azerbaidzhan composer U. Gadzhibekov. For a year after graduation, guided by D. Shostakovich. While a student at the Conservatory, appeared as conductor of the orchestra of the Teatr Muzykalnoi Komedii, 1938-1940.

      Directed the Azerbaidzhan Ensemble of the Magomaev Philharmonic Society. Artistic director of the Baku Philharmonic Orchestra, 1942-1945. Director from 1947. Taught instrumentation at the Conservatory from 1948.

      Lecturer, 1957. Professor from 1965. Director from 1969. His compositions include songs, ballet music, symphonies, and pieces for strings.
