Educated at the Moscow Arts School, 1907-1912, and Petersburg Academy of Arts, 1912-1915.
Became the foremost modernist Soviet architect, erecting some of the most advanced modernist buildings in Moscow in the 1920s. Veteran teacher at the Moscow Architectural Institute, Vkhutein-Vkhutemas, and other artistic and architectural establishments, 1919-1945. In the 1930s, changed to Stalinist architecture.
