Gorbanevskaia, Natal’ia was born in 1936 in Moscow.
Graduated in philology from Leningrad University.
Her poems circulated in samizdat from the early 1960s. In 1968, became active in the human rights movement. Founding member of Khronika Tekushchikh Sobytii.
In August 1968, pregnant and with a child in her arms, took part in a small demonstration in Red Square protesting against the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. Arrested, but soon released. Re-arrested in 1969 and sent to a psychiatric hospital in Kazan.
Released and left the USSR in 1975. Lives in Paris. Editor of the valuable historical magazine Pamiat. Has published several books of poetry.
Translator of Polish dissident publications.
