Background

  • Isarov, Boris was born on March 24, 1942 in Kuibyshev. Son of an officer in the General Staff and a Moscow Radio newscaster.

  • Education

    • Graduated from the Leningrad Theatre Institute in 1963.

    Career

    • At the age of one, taken to Moscow by his mother. Joined the Moscow Ostrovskii Drama Theatre, and later worked with S. Obraztsov in his Central Puppet Theatre. Also worked in TV and films.

      Married the English actress Eileen Benskin. Moved to London, 1973. Made his first stage appearance in London in his oneman show, Bobok by Dostoevskii at the National Theatre, 1977 (later seen at the Lincoln Center, New York).

      Appeared in, and was Assistant Director to O. Tabakov, in The Government Inspector, at the Crucible, Sheffield, 1978, and in Iurii Liubimov’s Crime And Punishment, London, 1983. Appeared on British TV and worked with directors David Jones, Jack Gold, Alan Gibson, Marvin Chomsky, and Herbert Wise. He played the artist Soutine in Wise’s TV film Skin by Roald Dahl in Tales of the Unexpected, which won an Edgar Award in the USA. Also appeared in British and American films such as: Reds, dir.

      Warren Beatty, The Human Factor, dir. Otto Preminger, Superman 4, dir. Sydney Furie, Border, dir.

      Mischa Williams, and American Roulette, dir. Maurice Hatton. Radio work: Bobok, Tolstoy in London. The Harshness of Time and A Bullet in the Ballet.

      Tom Stoppard also directed him in his play Every Good Boy at the Riverside Studios, London. Drama translations: Marriage, Three Girls in Blue, Orpheus, and Playing Moliere. Lives in London.
