Graduated from the Mikhailovskoe Artillery School, 1869.
Took part in the Russo-Turkish war, 1877-1878, and the Russo-Japanese war. During World War I, commander of the SouthWestern Front, 1914-1916. At the beginning of the February Revolution, 1917, sent by the Tsar from Supreme Headquarters on a mission to restore order in Petrograd.
The mission was soon abandoned, ensuring the victory of the revolutionaries.
