Karpov, Anatolii was born on May 23, 1951 in Zlatoust in the Urals.
Graduated from Moscow University as an economist.
World youth champion, 1969. World champion, 1975. Retained his title after 2 famous contests, 1978 and 1981, with the one-time Soviet grandmaster, V. Korchnoi, but lost it in 1985 to G. Kasparov.
