Grandson of Alexander II. Married Victoria, daughter of Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (son of Queen Victoria). Joined the Guards Equipage of the Russian navy. In 1917, welcomed the February Revolution, but in the autumn of the same year, after sailors’ disturbances, forced to flee with his family by sea to Finland.
Settled in France. Proclaimed by some Russian monarchist organizations to be head of the Romanov dynasty and pretender to the Romanov throne (some preferred Nikolai Nikolaevich, the Tsar’s uncle and one-time commander of the
Russian armies during World War I).
