Evgenii Konovalets, Ukrainian nationalist leader.
Konovalets, Evgenii was born in 1891 in near Lvov (then Austro-Hungary).
During World War I, conscripted into the Austrian army as a lieutenant. POW in Russia, 1915. During the
Civil War, organized the core of Ukrainian nationalist forces from former POWs in Russia (Sich riflemen), supporter of Petliura. After the Civil War, interned with his corps in Poland.
Organized the Ukrainian underground partisan movement, 1921-1923, which was most active in Western Ukraine (at that time Poland). After Petliura’s death, became the leading Ukrainian leader.
