Sidor Artem’evich KOVPAK

Sidor KOVPAK, USSR Government and military official. Major-General retired; member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party Lithuania Ukrainia, since 1956; Deputy Chairman, Presidium, Ukrainia Supreme Soviet, since 1947; Deputy Chairman, Presidium, War Veterans’ Committee, since 1956; member. Communist Party, since 1919. Order of Lenin, 1946, 1957; two “Gold Star” medals; other orders; medals; twice Hero of Soviet Union.


  • Kovpak, Sidor was born on May 26, 1887 in the village of Kotelva near Poltava. Son of a peasant.

  • Career

    • During the Civil War, joined communist partisans fighting the Germans, and later the Whites, in the Ukraine, against Kolchak in the East and Wrangel in the Crimea. In the 1920s, in the Red Army in the Ukraine. During World War II, organized partisan detachments.

      Made an extremely long, celebrated raid over 10,000km, which was in fact a constant retreat from his pursuers, from the Briansk forests in central Russia through the whole of German-occupied Ukraine to the Carpathian mountains, 1942-1943. Promoted to Major-general, 1943. Member of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukraine, 1947.

    Religion divides people, and is a cause of numerous wars and conflicts throughout the human history.


    The emphasis on peaceful coexistence doesn’t mean that the Soviet Union accepted a static world with clear lines. Socialism is inevitable and the "correlations of forces" were moving towards socialism.
