    Career

    • In the Ukrainian theatre from 1903. Entered the film industry, 1913. Among his best silent films are: Polikushka, Aelita, Papirosnitsa Ot Mossel’proma, Mat’, Sorok Pervyi, Potselui Meri Pikford, Konets Sankt Peterburga, Potomok Chingiz Khana and Prazdnik Sviatogo Iorgena.

      Worked closely with V. Pudovkin. His sound films include: Dezertir, Okraina, and Marionetki. Taught at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography from 1924.

      Regarded as a major stage designer of the Russian silent cinema.
