Studied at the Saratov Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, 1892-1896, under V.Konovalov and S.Barakki, then at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, 1897-1904, under Konstantin Korovin and Valentin Serov. Landscape and still-life painter. One of the organizers of the Golubaia Roza (Blue Rose) exhibition, 1907. Member of the Mir Iskusstva, and the Chetyre Iskusstva groups.
Taught art, 1917-1937 and 1945-1948 at the VKHUTEMAS-VKHUTEIN. Influenced in the 1900s by the V. Borisov-Musatov style. At that time, travelled widely in Russia, especially in Central Asia (Kirghizia). Exhibitions from 1899 with the Mir Iskusstva, the Blue Rose and the Four Arts.
