Lieven, Leonid Pavlovich, Prince was born on May 24, 1909 in Smiltene, former province of Livonia. Son of Prince Pavel Pavlovich Lieven.
Educated first privately in Livonia, then in Germany and England. Graduated in law from Oxford University, 1931.
. Left Russia with his family in September 1917. Returned to the former Russian Baltic provinces in 1918, then re-emigrated to Germany, 1919. Moved to England, 1923.
Called to the Bar, 1932. Sub-editor with the BBC World Service during World War II. Served in the British Army as a lt.-colonel. Retired. Awarded the MBE. In the 1980s, concentrated on literary translations.
