  • Lieven, Leonid Pavlovich, Prince was born on May 24, 1909 in Smiltene, former province of Livonia. Son of Prince Pavel Pavlovich Lieven.

  • Education

    • Educated first privately in Livonia, then in Germany and England. Graduated in law from Oxford University, 1931.


    • Colonel. . Left Russia with his family in September 1917. Returned to the former Russian Baltic provinces in 1918, then re-emigrated to Germany, 1919. Moved to England, 1923.

      Called to the Bar, 1932. Sub-editor with the BBC World Service during World War II. Served in the British Army as a lt.-colonel. Retired. Awarded the MBE. In the 1980s, concentrated on literary translations.
