    • Professor of the Petersburg Archaeological Institute, 1902. Editor of many Russian historical documents. Specialist in palaeography, author of a basic reference work on water marks.

      Wrote on Italo-Greek and Russian ancient art, Rublev, and Byzantine archaeology. Set up a unique Museum of Palaeography (starting with Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Coptic texts, and including unique Arabic, Greek and Latin works and medieval incunabula), which in 1925 was handed over to the Soviet Academy of Sciences.
