Twin brother of Zhores Medvedev. Researcher in various scientific institutes attached to the USSR Academy of Sciences. Edited the samizdat magazine Politicheskii Dnevnik.
In May 1970, instrumental in organizing an international protest in order to save his brother from forcible psychiatric detention. Edited the samizdat almanac XX-yi Vek. Harassed by the Committee for State Security, but wellconnected in Moscow, backed by powerful Soviet academics and probably by some high-ranking politicians.
Highly regarded by Western academics. Lives in Moscow, but keeps in touch with his brother, who lives in London. His main works are published abroad and translated into the major languages.
Has given interviews to the BBC defending Gorbachev’s policies on perestroika and East-West relations.
