Specialized in American literature. Became involved in the human rights movement in the mid-1960s. In 1980, expelled from the party.
Protested publicly against Dr. A. Sakharov’s exile to Gorkii. In November 1980, left the USSR with her husband. In January 1981, both were stripped of Soviet citizenship for their interviews and articles in the Western press.
