Graduated from Moscow University, 1942.
Orphaned at 6 and brought up by foster parents. Worked as a teacher at Sergiev Posad (now Zagorsk), and formed close ties with the monastery there. Priest, 1947. Served in Moscow churches.
Close to the priest Vsevolod Shpiller, who served at the same church. Appointed father confessor of the students of the Moscow Theological Academy, 1979. Universally liked by his flock.
Revered as a traditional starets of our time. Married since 1937 to Tatiana Melnikova. On the day of her death in 1983, fell ill and never recovered, dying 2 weeks later.
The last 3 years of his life were spent at the Church of the Protecting Veil in the village of Akulovo, where he died.
