Vasilii Dmitrievich Polenov

Vasilii Polenov, USSR Artist.

Background

  • Polenov, Vasilii was born on June 1, 1844 in Petersburg. Son of Dimitrii Polenov, the historian.

  • Education

    • Studied at the private studios of P. Chistiakov and I. Kramskoi, and also at art academies in Germany and Italy, 1872-1876.

    Career

    • Landscape and genre painter. Worked also in historical painting and stage design. At Petersburg University, 1868-1872, graduating in law.

      War artist-correspondent during the Balkan War, 1876, and the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-1878. From 1878, peredvizhnik. Worked for S. Mamontov’s private opera.

      One of the organizers of the People’s Theatre, 1910-1918. Taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, 1882-1895. Among his pupils were I. Levitan, K. Korovin and A. Arkhipov.

      Exhibited with every exhibition of note from 1869. Personal exhibitions: Jubilee, Moscow, 1924, Moscow, 1950, Erevan, Armenia, 1952.
