Vasilii Dmitrievich Polenov
Vasilii Polenov, USSR Artist.
Polenov, Vasilii was born on June 1, 1844 in Petersburg. Son of Dimitrii Polenov, the historian.
Studied at the private studios of P. Chistiakov and I. Kramskoi, and also at art academies in Germany and Italy, 1872-1876.
Landscape and genre painter. Worked also in historical painting and stage design. At Petersburg University, 1868-1872, graduating in law.
War artist-correspondent during the Balkan War, 1876, and the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-1878. From 1878, peredvizhnik. Worked for S. Mamontov’s private opera.
One of the organizers of the People’s Theatre, 1910-1918. Taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, 1882-1895. Among his pupils were I. Levitan, K. Korovin and A. Arkhipov.
Exhibited with every exhibition of note from 1869. Personal exhibitions: Jubilee, Moscow, 1924, Moscow, 1950, Erevan, Armenia, 1952.
