Alla Pugacheva

Alla Pugacheva, USSR Variety singer.


  • Pop idol and queen of the variety stage. Has made millions of records which Melodia, the official Soviet record company, sells with great success. In 1983, the composer A. Shnitke invited her to sing his new oratorio The History of Doctor Faust, with Gennadii Rozhdestvenskii conducting.

    The Moscow Tchaikovskii Concert Hall sold all their tickets immediately, but at the last moment the oratorio was banned. According to Soviet musical sources, the cultural authorities did not think that her pop style was suitable for the performance of a classical work. Lives in Moscow, and by all accounts is one of the few Soviet millionairesses.

    Visited Israel in the late 1980s and gave successful performances there.
