Member of the orchestra of the Bolshoi
Theatre, first as a violinist, and later as viola soloist, 1909-1923. Conductor and music director at the Moscow Jewish Theatre, 1922-1949. Wrote music using Jewish folk motives and Jewish classical writers’ works.
Also wrote music for films, and songs. Disappeared from the musical scene after 1949 at the time of the antiSemitic campaign. Regarded by critics as a classic of Jewish music.
