Took off on 6 February 1987 on a mission to the space station Mir. Spent 326 days in orbit. Returned to Earth on 29 December 1987.
Matched the space endurance record set by 3 other Soviet cosmonauts in 1984 (L. Kizim, V. Solov’ev and Ol. Atkov on Saliut 7), opening a new age in Soviet space research. Has shown that a man can work effectively for as long as 11 months in space.
Became a national hero.
