Lina Solomonovna Shtern

Lina Shtern, USSR Academician.


  • Shtern, Lina was born in 1878 in Libava, now Liepaia, Latvia. Daughter of a wealthy Jewish businessman.

  • Education

    • Graduated from Geneva University.


    • Lived in Germany, Italy and France. Worked as a physiologist and biochemist in several European laboratories. After the October Revolution 1917, returned to the USSR. First woman academician at the USSR Academy of Sciences.

      Spent the years 1949-1955 in the Gulag and in exile. Lived in Dzhambul, Kazakhstan. In 1987, Nauka publishing house in Moscow published her biography.


    Religion gets people to believe something untrue.


    Marxism–Leninism as the only truth could not, by its very nature, become outdated.
