    • Close friend of the Merezhkovskiis and D.V. Filosofov. Emigrated, 1920. Settled in the USA, 1923. Lived first in Boston, then Los Angeles, and later in New York.

      Compiled Music Since 1900, 1937. Editor of Baker’s Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, 1958 (with supplements, 1965,1971). Editor of Thompson’s music dictionaries, and of the American music section of the Enyclopaedia Britannica from 1958.

      Translated into English 50 Russkikh Pesen ot Glinki do Shostakovicha, New York, 1951. Visited the USSR, 1962. Other works include Music of Latin America, Buenos Aires, 1945, Lexicon of Musical Invective, 1953, and Perfect Pitch: a Life Story, OUP, 1988.

      Appeared at the Almeida Theatre in London, July 1988.
