  • Smirnov, Lev was born on June 21, 1911 in Petersburg.

  • Career

    • Aged 23, joined the NKVD under Iagoda. Worked in State Security under Ezhov and Beria. Whether he graduated in law is unconfirmed.

      In 1945, joined the Communist Party. Sent to the Nuremberg Trials, 1945-1946, as the USSR’s Assistant to the Main Prosecutor. During the Tokyo Trials, 1946-1948, acted in the same capacity.

      Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court of the USSR, 1957-1962. Chairman of the Supreme Court of the RSFSR, 1962-1972. President of the Association of Soviet Lawyers from 1964.

      Member of the Council of the International Association of Lawyers Democrats at the same time (appointed by the Soviet Government).
