    • Joined the Red Army, 1918. Took part in the Civil War as a regimental commander, brigade commander, and divisional chief-ofstaff. Deputy Chief of the General Staff, February 1941.

      During World War II, gained prominence as Commander of the Western front, 1943-1944, and Deputy Commander of the 1st Belorussian front, April 1945. Commander of Soviet Forces in Germany, 1946-1949, and 1st Deputy Minister of Defence, 1949. Chief of the General Staff, 1952-1960.
