Soyer, Raphael was born on December 24, 1899 in Borisoglebsk in the Ukraine. Son of a teacher of Hebrew.
His twin brother Moses and younger brother Isaac are both artists. Emigrated to the USA with his parents in 1912. Settled in Manhattan.
Became a realistic painter best known for his sombre and haunting portrayals of harried New Yorkers. During the 1930-1940s, his main subject was tramps. In 1981, awarded the Gold Medal of the American Institute and Academy of Arts and Letters.
