Studied at a music school in Khar’kov. Studied at a music school in Khar’kov. Pupil of Vsevolod Topilin. Pupil of Nikolai Peiko in the Composition Class, and of Anatolii Vedernikov in the Piano Class.
Started playing piano aged 4. Continued his training at the Moscow Gnesin Institute. Reader at Moscow Conservatory, 1972-1974, at the same time giving solo piano concerts.
His first composition received prizes, 1961 and 1969. Entered the avant-garde music group Astrei (with Sofia Gubaidulina and Viacheslav Artemov). His avantgarde compositions received recognition at the Rouen Festival of New Music, 1971.
Harassed by the Union of Soviet Composers, and lost his job. For a short time, worked as a street cleaner in Moscow. Emigrated in 1981. Teaches music at the Liibeck Music School.
Lives in Hamburg. Works for Sikorski Music Publishers in Hamburg as an editor of avantgarde Russian music.
