Worked as an editor in the Khudozhestvennaia Literatura publishing house, wrote short stories, and worked as a translator. During World War II, newspaper correspondent at the front. Wounded, married his nurse (the niece of the Soviet aviation commander, Alksnis).
Demanded permission to leave the USSR, 1961. Sent his unpublished works abroad, 1962, and was detained in the Kashchenko psychiatric hospital (one of the first cases of this method of persecution, rare under Khrushchev but becoming widespread under Brezhnev and Andropov). Expelled from the USSR in the late 1960s.
Settled in Switzerland.
