Youngest daughter of Leo Tolstoy. Helped her father to escape from his estate and begin his last travels, which ended with his death at Astapovo. After the Revolution 1917, keeper of the L. Tolstoy Museum at Yasnaya Poliana.
Left the USSR for Japan in the 1920s. Moved to the USA, and settled there. Created a farm and the foundation Tolslovskii Fond, which helped countless Russian refugees for many decades, financing resettlement programmes, old people’s homes, orphanages and many other humanitarian aid projects.
Wrote books about her father and published her memoirs. Regarded as the grand old lady of Russian emigres in the West.
