Nikolai Dmitrievich Uspenskii
Nikolai Uspenskii, Liturgical scholar, musicologist.
Uspenskii, Nikolai was born on January 3, 1900 in near Novgorod. Son of a priest.
Educated at the Novgorod Seminary. Graduated from the Petrograd Theological Institute, 1925.
After the closure of the Theological Institute in 1928, started a new career as a musicologist. After World War II, professor at the Leningrad Conservatory and the re-opened Theological Academy. Wrote a history of Russian liturgical singing, 1957.
Active participant in international Orthodox conferences and ecumenical work. Taught liturgies, church history, and church singing.
