Background

  • Valts, Karl was born in 1846 in Petersburg. Son of the chief machinist of the Mariinskii Theatre, F. Valts.

  • Career

    • From 1855, studied art design in Germany with O. Rahm and K. Gropius. From 1861 onwards, with the Bolshoi Theatre. Called the ‘magician of the stage’.

      Stage designer for the Malyi Theatre, Moscow, and the Mariinskii Theatre, Petersburg. With the Ballets Russes during their first season in Paris.
