  • Showalter, Jackson Whipps was born on February 4, 1860 in Minerva, Kentucky, United States. Son of Freeman Benoni and Margaret Rachel (Whipps) Showalter.

  • Education

    • Student Kenyon College, Ohio, 3 years, 1875-1878. Bachelor of Arts, Kentucky Military Institute, Frankfort, 1881.


    • Engaged in farming, since 1905. Won title of chess champion of America, 1888, and held it until defeated by Pillsbury some 10 years later. Finished 4th in International Tournament, 1904.

      Defeated by F. J. Marshall, American champion, 1909.
