  • Granger, Alfred Hoyt was born on May 31, 1867 in Zanesville, Ohio, United States. Son of Judge Moses Moorhead and Mary Hoyt (Reese) Granger.

    • Bachelor of Arts, Kenyon College, Gambier, O., 1887, Doctor of Science, 1932. Graduate Massachusetts Institute Technology, 1889. Student École des Beaux Arts, Paris, Atelier Pascal.

    Career

    • Spent several years as draftsman in offices of Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge, Boston and Chicago, and with Jenney & Mundie, Chicago. Began practice for self at Cleveland, O., 1893, planned laying out of Euclid Heights. Formed partnership with Charles S. Frost, Chicago, 1898.

      Designed La Salle St. and C.&N.W. Railway terminals, Northern Trust Bank Building, St. Luke’s Hospital, Home for Incurables, James C. King Home for Aged Men (Chicago). Union Station (Omaha). C.,M.,&St.P. Station (Minneapolis).

      Commissioned captain, Corps of Engineers United States Army, November 8, 1917. Member commission on emergency construction until August, 1918. Captain Company C, 78th Engineers until December, 1918.

      Honorary discharge as major engrs. Designed Hospital Building for Soldiers Home, Washington, District of Columbia. Formed firm of Granger and Bollenbacher, Chicago, December 1919.

      Designed Union and Administration buildings, Indiana U., Medical and Dental buildings (University of Illinois), Peirce Hall (Kenyon College), Chicago Club, Winnebago County Courthouse (Oshkosh, Wisconsin).
