  • Hewitt, Fayette was born on October 15, 1831 in Hardin Company, Kentucky, United States. Son of Robert Hewitt and Eliza Chastain Hewitt.

    Career

    • Teacher, 1850-1859; superintendent Dead Letter Office, Washington, 1859-1861. Served Confederate army, 1861-1865, becoming brigadier general. Adjutant general Trans-Mississippi Department, 1861-1862.

      Transferred to Breckenridge’s Division, 1863. Was in battles of Pea Ridge, Elkhorn, Newtonia, Chicamauga and all battles during Atlanta campaign, and after that with troops opposing Sherman’s March to the Sea. At time of final surrender was in South Carolina. with portion of Johnston’s army.

      Practiced law, 1865-1867. Adjutant general State of Kentucky, 1867-1876. Auditor Kentucky, 1879-1897.
