    • Employe in counting-house of S. & E. Austin, Boston. Then went to Vienna; studied music. Served in the United States Volunteers in Civil War, becoming major and brevetted lieutenant colonel, 1st Massachusetts Cavalry.

      Severely wounded at Aldie, Virginia, June 1863.
