Metropolitan Bank failed when road bankrupted, 1884, paid depositors out of his personal fortune. Trustee Wesleyan University. Made large gifts to Wesleyan Emory Universities contributor funds to Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn and to construction fund for Washington Memorial Arch.
Gave many paintings from his private collection to Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.
Married Phoebe Moser, 1849, at least 9 children.
