    • Came to Philadelphia with family, 1849. Educated Zane St. Grammar School, Philadelphia. Learned lithograph business.

    Career

    • Entered Union Army, August 1861. 1st lt, Company D, 88th Pennsylvania Vols. Promoted captain, 1862, colonel, 1863, bvtd. brigadier general, 1865.

      Badly wounded at 2d Bull Run, August 1862. Wound broke out anew at Chancellorsville, and he was sent home. Placed in charge Camp William Penn for organization of colored troops, and sent to the front over 14,000 mentor Began in insurance business, 1866.

      President Third National Bank, Philadelphia, July 19, since 1891. Director United Firemen’s Insurance Company. Trustee New York Life Insurance Company.
