    • Postmaster, Union Springs, New York, 1881-1885. Moved to Seattle, Washington, 1889. With Edward O. Graves founded Washington National Bank, president, 1900-1906. and now Chairman of the Board of its successor, National Bank of Commerce.

      Founded banking house of Graves & Backus (succeeded by 1st National Bank), Bellingham, Washington, 1895. One of organizers of Seattle Clearing House, 1889, and president Seattle Clearing House Association, 1902, 14, 21, 23. One of incorporators Federal Reserve Bank, San Francisco.

      Director Seattle branch Federal Reserve Bank, 1917-1933. Special commissioner to China. Japan and P.I. for Alaska-Pacific-Yukon Exposition, 1907.

      Chairman state committee Military Tr. Camp Association, 1917. Member District Committee on Capital Issues, World War.

      Regent University of Washington, 1909. Trustee Seattle Chamber Commerce. Director Seattle Public Library, 1930-1932.
